About the publication

A closer look at life in Maryland.

Maryland Eagles Eyes examines the pressures shaping daily life in our state and the possibilities for making it better.

For a student fitting classes around work, a business owner waiting on an overdue invoice or a family searching for affordable care, the state’s larger challenges are personal. Their experiences deserve attention, and the conditions behind them deserve examination.

Our coverage begins with the people who know those pressures firsthand. We look at the circumstances behind their experiences, examine possible responses and ask who is in a position to act.

Our field of view

We cover work and education, household finances, housing, business, family life, health and the places we share. Our interest extends from Baltimore and the Washington suburbs to Southern Maryland, Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore.

A service that is useful in one county may be out of reach in another. A training opportunity means little to someone who cannot afford to stop working. We want our stories to account for those realities.

The Maryland Brief

Our central format follows a particular problem from the experience of the people affected to the decisions that might change it. Each brief brings together local voices, supporting evidence and a careful assessment of what could help.

That may mean explaining an existing resource, examining an approach used elsewhere or identifying a need that a business, community group or public institution could address. We will be clear about costs, eligibility and limitations, and distinguish a promising idea from a demonstrated result.

We intend to return to these stories after publication, record what has changed and keep unresolved questions in view.

Our commitment to readers

We will identify our sources, explain what the evidence supports and acknowledge what remains uncertain. Corrections and substantive updates will be clearly marked. The people in our stories deserve to be represented with care, and our readers deserve enough context to form their own judgments.

We hope you will find something here that helps you understand your own experience, see a neighbor’s circumstances more clearly or recognize a problem you can help solve.
